Portugal

This exhibition proudly showcases a collection of 12 captivating books from Portugal, each a vibrant testament to the intertwined themes of Diversity & Sustainability. From the pages, you’re invited to explore the power of imagination and the significance of reusing resources in an increasingly eco-conscious era, challenging perceptions through a cardboard world of possibilities. Some stories embrace rejection, celebrating mutual support and unity amid diversity. Some stories magnificently illustrate how imperfections harmonize to create something flawless, mirroring life’s diversity. Some other stories offer a tribute to Earth, intertwining scientific knowledge with an appreciation for nature’s interconnectedness. These books weave a narrative tapestry that celebrates inclusivity, embraces differences, and champions sustainability. Each page is a testament to our interconnectedness with nature, inspiring a collective responsibility to cherish diversity and safeguard our planet for future generations.

A white story? (Uma história branca?)

Manuela Castro Neves, Maria Remédio

A chicken’s egg, a sheep’s cheese, a snowman, an arctic fox, a grandmother and a grandson are all candidates for characters in a story that wants to be completely white. However, because of one or other detail of their appearance, they end up being rejected and don’t get any part. Discouraged, they prepare to return home when an unexpected event brings them together in another story, this time full of color and tenderness, highlighting the importance of mutual help and solidarity. A text comprises several short, rhythmic narrative sequences where the unusual and the humor, underlined by the illustration, are very much present.

With an open door to the world (De porta aberta para o mundo)

Sandra Figueiredo

An atlas of stories that open doors to the whole world. It appeals to young people to discover themselves, recognize the characters, and embrace differences as unique. It is a book of characters faced with difficulties or special ways of being that they didn’t choose but whose willpower and environment determine a metamorphosis of feelings and skills. Each of the 13 stories represents the story of a child or adolescent with a distinct sensitivity, a learning difficulty, a specific educational need, or an obstacle created by a problematic circumstance, one of those that timelessly plague the world. Recommended as a support measure for learning and inclusion.

Catching the sun, catching some air (Apanhar ar, apanhar sol)

Isabel Minhós Martins, Bernardo P. Carvalho

This book is a tribute to our place in space, the Sun, the atmosphere, and the Earth. It has information, activities, pages to breathe in deep with, and pages to have fun with. On some pages, we answer questions that science has already found answers for (What is the wind? How big is the sun?); in others, we tell stories involving bees, trees, or flying seeds; in others, still, we talk about people, of course. The sun enters through our window, and the air enters our lungs. The hats that fly away with the wind. The people that are the sunshine of our lives. Are you coming? The sun is waiting for us; let’s go. We really could use some fresh air in collaboration with Sonia Antón (astrophysicist), Ricardo Trigo (meteorologist), Ricardo Tomé, and Fernando Catarino (biologist).

Perfect defect (Defeito perfeito)

Lara Xavier, Hélder Teixeira Peleja

Without knowing it, the fruits together formed the best fruit salad, with flaws but all perfect…The banana for being tall and seeing further. The orange for being chubby and rolling over faster. The grape for being small and hiding in impossible places. Cherries for being shy and scaring away strangers. The avocado for being cocky and courageously protective. The Kiwi for being unkempt and extraordinarily comical. The pitahaya because it has no flavor, and no one can get enough of it. What’s your perfect fault?
