France

To address climate change and biodiversity loss as paramount issues, France considers innovation one of the key answers. The challenges humanity faces are so huge that disruptive technologies are required.

Daily adjustments in individual behaviors are necessary but no longer sufficient. France launched a massive investment plan two years ago to change how we produce, how we travel, how we consume, and how we feed ourselves. Called “France 2030”, it aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and reverse the biodiversity loss curve. Investing in our future also requires revisiting the way we organize ourselves collectively.

In numerous schools, universities, and companies across France, citizens are trying to better understand the world and refocus on humanism as a core value. In this process, diversity is a key leverage. To imagine a desirable future, we need collective intelligence. To stimulate collective intelligence and achieve breakthroughs, nothing compares with diversity. Climate and biodiversity will ultimately be preserved by promoting human diversity, physical condition, gender, or origin! In 2024, what better example than the Olympic and the Paralympic Games to illustrate France’s commitment to sustainability and diversity?

Paris 2024 made an ambitious commitment: to halve the carbon footprint of the Olympic Games compared to the 2012 and 2016 games, which will offset more than will be emitted. In the great history of Olympism, these Games will also be the first to achieve full parity, with as many women athletes as men. Books are vital in this quest for a renewed humanism of the 21st century, in France and the Indo-Pacific area, in this fight to save our planet. They can nurture, raise awareness, and comfort us when needed. Thank you, TIBE, for choosing this powerful and crucial topic for your 2024 edition!

A NEW WORLD OF FARMING IN QUEBEC (LE NOUVEAU MONDE PAYSAN AU QUÉBEC)

Stéphane Lemardelé

Meeting the stakeholders of a new, community-based agricultural ecosystem deep in the heart of the Quebec countryside. Maud-Hélène, Christian, Yoana, and Jean-Martin are convinced that another way of farming, another way of life, is possible. They build the farms of tomorrow, come up with new approaches, and embark on new projects that are more humanistic and community-oriented. Confronted with obstacles from trade unions, quotas, bureaucracy, and challenging climatic conditions, these farmers and craftsmen struggle to offer an alternative to intensive farming and processed food. Through a series of portraits, Stéphane Lemardelé brings us the story of these Quebec farmers and artisans who came here to seek a new way of life that is healthier and more mindful of the environment.

Zhu and the water pearl (Zhu et la perle d’eau)

Didier Dufresne, Marion Sonet

One night, fire descends on the village of Zhu and his parents. It devours houses and vegetation for days. The inhabitants had to flee, but drought also reigned in the neighboring valley. Legend says that only “the pearl of water” can defeat fire. So Zhu decides to act. The young girl leaves for Mount Source, accompanied by Niao, her tame nuthatch. She will face a monstrous spider there before triumphing and restoring water to her people. But what happened to the bird? It is a story inspired by Didier Dufresne by a tale from Yunnan, magnificently illustrated by Marion Sonet. Through villagers’ courageous victory over natural disasters, the tale tends to arouse children’s awe of nature and gives the idea of sustainability: human beings are part of nature, and while living on its resources, they have to give themselves to it.

Masculinity (Masculinités)

Tal Madesta, Victoire Tuaillon, Yuming Hey, Raphaël Poulain

What characterizes a man? The question is more complex than it seems because no one is born a man. What we call “masculine” has varied greatly throughout history and across cultures and is being questioned increasingly. Drawing on all literature, painting, photography, cinema, and advertising, this book offers a complete overview, organized around the most important symbolic moments in a man’s life: growing up, defining oneself, working, loving, being a father, etc. This encyclopedia of modern man attempts to deconstruct clichés, with interviews and testimonies from Youtubers, actors, and rugby players, but also from historians of male mentalities, representations, and images. This fascinating book presents a vision of masculinity free of social expectations and gender norms.

Plastic Odyssey

Alexandre Dechelotte, Simon Bernard

Every minute, 19 tons of plastic are dumped into the ocean. The Plastic Odyssey project aims to remedy this ecological disaster. Their boat travels along the world’s most polluted coasts, collecting, sorting, and transforming plastic waste into useful objects or materials. Anything not recycled is converted into fuel to power the ship. From Marseille, Plastic Odyssey sailed to Lebanon, Egypt, Algeria, and Morocco before heading to Cape Verde, Senegal, and Guinea. It will soon cross the Atlantic to South America before finishing its journey in the Pacific and Asia. The crew tests solutions adapted to local needs with residents and entrepreneurs at every stop. At the same time, teams worldwide are developing waste management projects in partnership with locals to tackle the greatest challenge of our time.

Philophile Series, What Defines My Gender? (Philophile, Qu’est-ce qui fait mon genre ?)

Aïda N'Diaye, Lea Murawiec

Today, if we recognize an essential difference between sex, as a biological reality, and gender, which is a cultural, social construction, this very distinction raises many questions. How do we distinguish nature and culture, innate and acquired? How is gender constructed, and what relations of domination does it produce in the social space? What role do images (advertising, cinema…) play in how people represent themselves and portray their gender? The fights for women’s rights and gender equality remain fragile and threatened, but other models are emerging, freeing society from the norms that alienate us.

Bees and Earthworms (Abeilles et vers de terres)

Florence Thinard, Benjamin Flouw

The honeybee and the earthworm play essential roles in our ecosystem. Without the bee, there would be no fruit or vegetables. Without the earthworm, the soil would lose nutrients, meaning nothing would grow. Through vivid illustrations of these animals’ environments, this picture book explains how these endangered species reproduce, grow, move, eat, defend themselves, and, most importantly, contribute to the balance of nature. A sensitive title with an original point of view adapted for young readers and extensive content to discover more about these endangered species and how to protect them.

Nature, What Is It? (La nature c’est quoi ? )

Elisabeth Combres, Benjamin Bachelier

Nature is a concept invented by modern man to separate humans from the rest of the world. The ambitious aim of this richly illustrated title is to question this Western notion that reduces nature to an object to be explored, a heritage to be preserved, or a resource to be exploited. From Australian Aboriginals to environmental activists, the founders of natural parks, or researchers in the agri-food industry…there are a thousand ways of looking at and thinking about “nature”!

Bunch of saurians! (Bande de sauriens!)

Erwan Bargain, Francine Vergeaux

Enough is enough! Harry, the alligator, has had enough of humans; they hunt him, track him down to lock him up in a zoo or take his skin. Harry decides to leave his bayou. Is the air more breathable elsewhere? From encounter to encounter, from Sally, the wild cat, to Léon, the raccoon, our alligator discovers that another species is threatened: humans themselves! A fable, all in rhymes (rich) and humor (fine), tells us about the fragility of our planet and its inhabitants with a parody of a sustainable future for animals.
