EMA AND THE MACHITUN

Introduction

Ema is a Mapuche girl and her grandmother is the machi of the community: the spiritual guide and healer. The grandmother is unveiling the secrets and mysteries of nature to her granddaughter as she grows, responding to the curiosity that is triggered in the girl by every living thing, every phenomenon that occurs before her curious eyes. The machi cures sick people using herbs or, if the illness is serious, performing the machitun, the ancestral Mapuche ceremony in which she communicates with the spirits to help the sufferers. This scares Ema, who doesn’t know that she will follow in her grandmother’s footsteps. Until one day she has a revelation in a dream: she is ready to begin her training. She has been chosen to be a machi. The book, with beautiful illustrations that include animals and plants, has a glossary with various terms used in the story, including several words in Mapuzugun.
