Over the years, cultural and literary criticism in Taiwan have been divided into two fields—literature and non-literature. There is a lack of cross-disciplinary dialogue between the two. This is precisely the reason why SpringHill publishes a magazine titled SpringHill Literati. SpringHill excels at publishing titles in humanities and social science, and it hopes to present a variety of literary topics and cultures. The first issue is titled A Whistle in History: the Origins of Sorrows and Creativity, which features Huang Chong Kai. Huang is a novelist with a history degree, and has been influenced by Taiwanese history. His work, The Contents of the Times, has won many awards. The second issue, State and the People Without History, is centered on the author Lai Hsiang-Yin. This issue focuses further on the relationship between state and people from a historical perspective. In addition to publishing the full text of Lai’s new novel Mr. Ching-Chih, the book also invites critics to analyze daily life during the martial law period from the perspectives of literary techniques, time, political philosophy, and reflections on the martial law system. It is a rare magazine project that highlights each issue with a complete theme rather than fragmented articles.
