Fiery Tides: The Hong Kong Anti-Extradition Movement and Its Impacts

Publisher:The Reporter Cultural Foundation、Rive Gauche Publishing House

Book Introduction

Before the end of summer 2019, no one would have thought that the Fugitive Offenders and Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Legislation Amendment Bill would become the one-year-long Anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill Movement. This book goes beyond the previous perspectives presented by writers. It spends a long time documenting the cross-generational protesters in Hong Kong, the process of the birth of Hong Kong people’s consciousness from the depths of history, the transformation of the Chinese Communist Party’s way of governance in Hong Kong, and more importantly, the subsequent impact of the movement on the generations who are experiencing this war. Fiery Tides are those black-clad protestors that have emerged from the flames, representing the accumulation of feelings and consciousness over the past 22 years after the handover of Hong Kong. This book explores the past, present, and future of the “new Hong Kong people,” hoping to inspire readers to re-examine their view of Hong Kong.

Return and Representation: Anthology of Fiction About Taiwan's White Terror

Publisher:SpringHill Publishing

Book Introduction

Although there are many anthologies about the February 28th incident, there have been no anthologies published about White Terror and martial law. Therefore, Return and Representation: Anthology of Fiction About Taiwan’s White Terror—published by the National Human Rights Museum in cooperation with SpringHill—intends to fill this gap and enrich readers’ understanding of White Terror from a literary perspective, and to re-edit Taiwanese literature under the theme of White Terror and martial law. The book’s two editors, Hu Shu-Wen and Tong Wei-Ger, have sought to maximize the interpretation of White Terror and the institution of martial law through the works of 30 authors. The selected authors span over seven decades. From Wu Chuo-Liu’s Potsdam Section Chief (1947) to Huang Chong Kai’s Dixon Phrase (2017), there is a comprehensive reflection of history and national violence by different generations, ethnic groups, social classes, and genders. The book also revived many out-of-print masterpieces, such as Chiu Yung-Han’s Hong Kong and Chen Yuan-San’s Spring in Pu Wei.

①SpringHill Literati Vol. I A Whistle in History: the Origins of Sorrows and Creativity
②SpringHill Literati Vol. 2 Hsiang-Yin Lai: State and the People Without History

Publisher:SpringHill Publishing

Book Introduction

Over the years, cultural and literary criticism in Taiwan have been divided into two fields—literature and non-literature. There is a lack of cross-disciplinary dialogue between the two. This is precisely the reason why SpringHill publishes a magazine titled SpringHill Literati. SpringHill excels at publishing titles in humanities and social science, and it hopes to present a variety of literary topics and cultures. The first issue is titled A Whistle in History: the Origins of Sorrows and Creativity, which features Huang Chong Kai. Huang is a novelist with a history degree, and has been influenced by Taiwanese history. His work, The Contents of the Times, has won many awards. The second issue, State and the People Without History, is centered on the author Lai Hsiang-Yin. This issue focuses further on the relationship between state and people from a historical perspective. In addition to publishing the full text of Lai’s new novel Mr. Ching-Chih, the book also invites critics to analyze daily life during the martial law period from the perspectives of literary techniques, time, political philosophy, and reflections on the martial law system. It is a rare magazine project that highlights each issue with a complete theme rather than fragmented articles.

①The Elementary School of No-Worries 2: The Iced-Tea Incident
②Where Does Tofu come from?
③Where Do Pineapples come from?
④Where Does Clam Fish come from?
⑤The Oviraptor: The Dragon who Loves Eggs

Publisher:Global Views – Commonwealth Publishing Group

Book Introduction

Tofu, Pineapple and Clam Fish are three titles within the “Knowledge Picture Book” series. The core concept behind the creation of these books is to present multi-disciplinary knowledge with beautiful image narratives, making the knowledge of food interesting and playful, and enabling children to experience the wonderful connection between various forms of life on earth. The School of No-Worries is a set of chapter books that combine social-emotional learning and emotional education. Through the stories in the books, children can feel understood and supported, learn to perceive their own emotions and those of others, and communicate in ways that do not hurt either others or themselves. I hope that through these books, children will build resistance and confidence to face setbacks, and develop gentleness and consideration to see other people’s needs and frustrations. The Oviraptor series nurtures imagination and empathy. It presents the various inner voices that go through the minds of preschool children. It embodies fear and other worries, helping children deal with various emotions and contradictions, in hopes that they will learn how to “tame” their inner fears and to have fun along the way.
