Folktale series: Republic of Indonesia: The Legend of Bengkaal the Giant and Pelanduk the Deer

Introduction

Long time ago,to the east of Kalimantan,
there wasthe Bato’ Mili Mountain, which was sky-high.

Every night, a sky monster descended
to the peak of the Bato’ Mili and
climbed down to eat the villagers’ livestock.

The villagers decided to cut shorter the peak of the Bato’ Mili Mountain so that the monster would not be able to come down anymore.

At the base of the mountain
there was a river by the name
of Mahakam. And the protector giant
of the river was called Bengkaal.

Bengkaal was big and tall, and had long arms.
When he strolled along the river bank,
his hands dragged on the trees and
made them bend.Although Bengkaal
was scary looking, he didn’t hurt people.
He kept the river clean every day.

It was the day that villagers got together and
cut off the peak of the Bato’ Mili Mountain.
The noise echoed through the forest.Bengkaal
was startled. He came and watched closely
that a piece of rock punctured him in the eye.
The villagers helped pull off the piece of rock.

AfterBengkaal recovered, he went back to taking care of the river. But the rock from the
Bato’ Mili Mountain was scattered all over.
