Folktale Series: Lao People’s Democratic Republic: The legend of Paya Tan and the Origin of Bang Fai

Introduction

“Praya Tan” was the mighty god who lived in heaven.

He despised humans who were never pleased with anything.
They swore when it rained too much. They cursed when it rained too little.

So “Praya Tan” prompted that rain shall not fall
on earth for 7 years, 7 months and 7 days.

There was severe drought. Humans and animals greatly suffered
and died in large numbers.

At that moment, a god called “Praya Potisan”, came to be born on
earth as “Paya Kankaak”.

With grace and merits, he had many companies. They all were
begging him to help get rid of the horrible drought.
As a result, Paya Kankaak called in everyone to fight together.

The Paya Naga stepped forward as the first army
to fight Praya Tan in heaven. But Paya Naga was defected
as it was slashed through its head by Praya Tan.
That’s how Paya Naga had a crest on its head from that day on.

The second army was a wasp army.
It was also defected as the wasps were sliced by Praya Tan until they
were almost cut in half. That’s how wasps had very narrow waists
from that day on.

The third army was led by Paya Kankaak himself.
He planned fighting strategy cleverly.

First, he sent an army of weevils to eat the handles
of the enemy’s weapons – spears, swords and other weapons.

He then sent an army of scorpions to hide in clothes and armors of
Praya Tan’s soldier. Another army of centipedes was to hide under
enemy’s tables and dark corners in their kitchen and in the piles of firewood.
