Human Glitches

Introduction

“There are seventeen short stories in the book. It would be over-generalized if we just label them as science fiction, because the stories are more than that. The narrative is realistic and down-to-earth, but it creates a surreal, dystopian and futuristic atmosphere like the novel Cyborg. In the worlds that Lin created, the settings are in a familiar reality but she takes the mundane elements of being a wife, mother, sister, woman, human and plays out these roles in settings and situations that are emotionally familiar yet often disturbing and disorienting.
It makes readers wonder, among humans and robots, which one is colder and more isolated?

In “A Body”, in the future, performing your virtual marital duties to your virtual wife, picking up your symbolic children, doing household chores for them can earn you extra points to help you get a perfect image, get a pay raise and promotion, etc.. In “Peeling”, a woman peels and pastes her own skin onto the plastic model that she bought to create her perfect partner. In “Annie”, a nerdy guy buys a blow-up doll obviously for obtaining sexual pleasure but it turns out the doll now named Annie can perform all the wifey duties. In “Hotel California”, inspired by Eagle’s Hotel California, this piece was written in 2018 but miraculously predicts the quarantine life in the pandemic time that we are living now such as the room/prison that you cannot leave, meals are sent directly to your room, and all your vital signs are documented.
