When They Were Hurting Each Other: A Hundred Years of Debates on Taiwanese Literature

Introduction

Multiple literary debates during the 20th century shape our current understanding of Taiwanese literature and literature as a whole. Some go even further to assert these very debates gave birth to Taiwanese literature as a distinct genre. However, those decades of contentious intellectual debates over literary thought, philosophies, and perspectives give us the freedom and space today to discern our identity, appreciate the unique nature of “being Taiwanese”, and develop literature that truly belongs to us. Also, learning the stories underpinning these debates lets us examine retrospectively how our modern literary perspectives and predilections were formed. In this book, Chu Yu-hsun is our “sideline commentator”, guiding us through ten formative literary debates of the 20th century. He reveals the inciting incidents behind each and outlines the arguments made by both sides. He also explores in retrospect how these debates have influenced subsequent generations of authors and other thinkers.
