Unkobanashi / ウン小話

Introduction

The author, Noriko Yuzawa, is a professor at Hosei University and a specialist in historical geography and agricultural history. She calls herself a “human feces geographer,” a unique title, and has conducted research, public lectures, and workshops on regions, the environment, and society from the perspective of food and excrement, two things familiar to humans. This book is a “poop education book” written by Professor Yuzawa for children. In this storybook, set in an elementary school classroom, children learn about the SDGs and human history through poop (food and excrement cycle) with the adventurous teacher in an enjoyable way. There are 17 “Unko” (Poop) stories that unfold in every class, including social studies, physical education, Japanese, science, and arts and crafts. The book is filled with cute illustrations by Maki Kanai, famous for her reportage essays and illustration essays on her travels around the world. The book includes commentary and appendices such as “What would you do with a toilet in the event of a disaster?” What would you do if there was no toilet paper?
