Those Who Stay: Rural Elderly’s Life Stories
Introduction
The elderly residents of Taishi Village in Taiwan’s Changhua County live in a region in chronic economic, educational, and infrastructural decline. Born mostly in the 1930s and 1940s, and with little education to choose otherwise, they are peasants as their parents and grandparents were before them. However, the erosion of time-honored traditions and cultural certainties in postwar Taiwan has broken traditional intergenerational bonds, leaving the elderly in Taishi and countless other communities no longer able to count on their children to take over their farmlands or accompany them in old age. This book explores the experience of aging in modern rural Taiwan, examining the connections among physical, self, and community identities and the interactions between people and place. It tells how the oldest generation of Taishi perceive and handle tectonic social change within a framework of beliefs, identities, and values tied to a much earlier era.
