THE RACING PENGUINS
Introduction
Here are three penguins who have just begun to run. As they race toward some unseen goal, the different looks in their eyes make us anticipate what lies ahead. Running at nearly the same speed, the penguins seem evenly matched—until the first penguin stumbles and falls, and a new situation unfolds.
The second penguin keeps running straight ahead, while the third penguin, troubled by the fall, turns back to look. The fallen penguin watches the others grow farther and farther away, but cannot bring itself to give up. Summoning its strength, it starts running once again.
The penguins’ run closely resembles our own lives. We strive toward a better future, yet along the way we sometimes fall, feel discouraged, and envy others. The different expressions in the three penguins’ eyes seem to symbolize our own differing directions and aspirations.
As we move through life, these individual aspirations often lead us to compare ourselves with others, and at times to long for what we do not have. Three Penguins invites readers to reflect deeply on what truly matters in our lives.
