THE MOON GLASSES

Introduction

The friends living in a peaceful forest share one worry: the terrifying glare of a predator tiger that appears at night. One day, a chipmunk studies the predator’s piercing eyes and invents the “Moon Glasses,” which light up the eyes even in the dark. The Moon Glasses quickly become an essential item among the forest friends, and young rabbits, now able to see brightly at night, play mischievously until dawn.
However, the other animals mistake the playful tiger sounds made by the young rabbits for a real tiger. Startled, the friends quickly hide and begin staring fiercely at one another in an effort to look stronger. The moment their sharp gazes collide—flash!—something so intense happens that they cannot even keep their eyes open.
The reason nocturnal animals’ eyes shine at night is because of the tapetum. Inspired by this phenomenon, the author adds a lively imagination to create Moon Glasses. No matter how remarkable an invention the Moon Glasses may be, they fail to light the way at the very moment it matters most. What blinded the friends was not the darkness of the night, but suspicion and fear directed toward one another.
Like the forest friends, we too sometimes fail to see others’ true intentions because of prejudice and misunderstanding. To use the Moon Glasses properly, one must look gently rather than glare. Likewise, to truly see one another’s hearts, we need warm feelings toward each other—so that anger, hatred, fear, and jealousy do not cloud our vision.
