Do you remember what it feels like to walk into a place that promises more than just food? In The Enchanted Meals of Kitchen Fairy Granny, little Yang‑dong is often left eating alone—his mother has passed away, his father works late, and school meals tastes so bad.
One day, with his meal card clutched in hand, he searches for a place to eat and is rebuffed—until he discovers a strange, new restaurant run by a granny who cooks on an old-fashioned stove, greets him with kindness, and refuses payment.
For Yang‑dong, the kitchen becomes more than a place to fill his stomach—it becomes a refuge. The granny becomes something like family: someone who listens, cares, and shares warmth. She asks only for stories in return for meals, leading Yang‑dong to explore the library, reminisce about nights his mother used
to read to him, and even face his own hesitations around reading. Through gentle magic and simple sharing, this story reminds us that “family” is often made through compassion, sharing food, and opening our hearts. And towards the end
of the story, the readers will be touched by what the meals bring for Yang-dong.
The book also allows a glimpse of another Korean folk tale character while covering the current issues.
