Kazuo Shinohara
Architect. 1925-2006. Born in Shizuoka Prefecture. Graduated from the mathematics department at the Tokyo School of Physics (now the Tokyo University of Science) in 1947. He then shifted his career path to architecture and enrolled in the architecture department at the Tokyo Institute of Technology (now the Institute of Science Tokyo), where he studied under Kiyoshi Seike and graduated in 1953. Assumed professorship at the university in 1970 and served as a visiting professor at Yale University in 1984. In 1986, he retired from the Tokyo Institute of Technology and became an emeritus professor. That same year, he taught as a visiting professor at the Vienna University of Technology and established the Shinohara Atelier. Notable works include the Umbrella House, House in White, Tanikawa House, and House in Uehara. Notable publications include Jutaku Kenchiku [Residential Architecture], Jutakuron [Housing Theory], and Chotaisu Shugo Toshi e [Towards a Super Large Collective City]. Notable awards include the Architectural Institute of Japan’s AIJ Prize in 1972 for his series of housing projects following the Uncompleted House, the Minister of Education Award for Fine Arts in 1989 for the Tokyo Institute of Technology Centennial Hall, the Medal with Purple Ribbon in 1990, the Mainichi Art Award Special Prize
