Return to the Motherland

Introduction

Panai, the singer of the famous pop song “Wandering,” turned doubts about her self- identity into thoughts of improving the lives of Taiwan’s indigenous peoples. She raised a call for indigenous dignity, transitional justice, and the return of indigenous traditional territories. Panai and her partner Istanda Husungan Nabu began public protests on Taipei’s Ketagalan Boulevard in 2017 and, after repeated police evictions, moved their round-the-clock protest to the 228 Peace Memorial Park. Out of the spotlight, the media largely lost interest. Undaunted, Panai and Nabu’s sit-in activism persisted for seven whole years – more than 2,600 days. This book is the first to narrate Panai’s life story, honestly and provocatively revealing the history of the forced removal of Taiwan’s indigenous peoples from their home and land.
