Biography & True Stories
One Island, One Dream
Introduction
Three forerunners who came to epitomize Taiwan’s rapid progress across the Japanese colonial period
We live on an island teeming with green, where flora is but a matter of course in our daily lives and where we have grown too accustomed to the light and shadow falling from the swaying summertime leaves. But these trees which have risen from the ground were each once a seed that struggled to take root. The trees do not speak, only accompanying us in silence, especially from the familiar—and sometimes unfamiliar—land on which we have found our footing.
The Dream of Curing a City|Hamano Yashirō
Do you see it? This city’s future.
The Dream of Establishing a Home|George Gushue-Taylor
Promise me that you will send me back to my real home.
The Dream of Freedom|Wu Hsin-jung
One must know their past to see the future.
