Hong Kong Chronicle

Introduction

Hong Kong Chronicle: 1974-1996 connects three generations and the final decades of British Hong Kong through the experiences of the Lian family. The protagonist reflects on the varied experiences of family members that link them to significant events in modern Hong Kong history. The rise and fall of the Lian family also serves as a microcosm of Hong Kong, and each family member encapsulates a particular aspect of the Hong Kong “character”.
Hong Kong Chronicle: 2017 focuses on Lian Cheng, the father of the Lian family, and Lin Jia, Shi Xiang’s love interest. Starting from the third generation in Hong Kong Chronicle: 1974- 1996, this work depicts the growing conflict between Hong Kong and Mainland China after the colony’s return. Continuing to use characters in the story as reflections of the era, their life experiences put into sharp relief how today’s Hong Kong residents feel like strangers in their beloved city.
