This book, the culmination of years of fieldwork and interviews, takes readers into the everyday life of migrant workers in Taiwan, who today fill essential positions in a broad cross-section of industries. On their rare days off, they socialize with gusto. They chat with boisterous enthusiasm, are hungry for romance, enjoy singing Taiwanese songs and dancing, and make new friends at the drop of a hat. They form deep emotional bonds with the elderly Taiwanese they look after and actively participate in Taiwanese cultural observances and folk festivals. Of course, they also miss their families back home. In this book, acrimony and theorizing are eschewed in favor of simply listening in on migrant worker conversations and their perspectives on their Taiwan experience.
