Farewell

Introduction

A split in the Mamazangljan royal family sends ominous whispers echoing across the tribe’s sky. When tribal elder Vuvu Ljegean ignores traditional practices for dividing the family, she falls ill and quickly passes away. During the ancient funeral rites, eagles appear in the sky, circling the gathering as a symbol of the ancestral spirits escorting Ljegean back to Mount Dawu. Her young granddaughter Ljuzam is soon installed as tribal leader, but years of missionary proselytization have long since severed the succession path of the Pulingav witches. Thus, the traditional ritual for comforting the spirit was entrusted to a witch from a neighboring branch, who summoned forth the spirits of both the ancestors and Ljegean. When Ljuzam found Ljegean’s ancient wooden comb and hairpin, her questions about a childhood neighbor and companion set the stage for a century-long tale of resilience by three generations of women from their tribe.
