Before Dawn: Innocence in the Turbulent Taiwan

Introduction

The author’s seminal coming-of-age experiences of school corporal punishment, the physical awakening of adolescence, and the cultural melting pot of MTV, discos and cinemas overlapped with the foundational events that shaped Taiwan society today. These include the Airport Incident, the end of Martial Law, the May 20th Farmers’ Movement, the self-immolations of Jhan Yi-Hua and Cheng Nylon, the Wild Lily student movement, the Taiwan Strait Missile Crisis, the Asian Financial Crisis, and more. As a junior high school girl witnessing those tumultuous street protests, instead of experiencing sorrow or anger, she experiences these events with adolescent innocence and an eagerness to fearlessly explore the unknown. Decades later as a journalist, she reflects on these events. While her memories are vivid and immediate, political awareness now brings hindsight. Revisiting that historical period and recalibrating her understanding, she discovers a glimmer of light at the end of the journey.
