Mae Nak: Classical Ghost of Siam

Introduction

Almost two hundred years ago, Amdaeng Nak or Nang Nak was known as Phi Tai Thang Klom (ghost of a pregnant woman who both herself and her child died during childbirth). Her corpse was buried at the cemetery of Wat Mahabut on Phra Khanong canal. According to folklore, it is believed that the ghosts of those who had died in childbirth were ferocious. In the case of Nang Nak, she haunted and terrorized the villagers and the monks, so everyone was horrified by her. Because of her love and care for her husband, she transformed herself into a human to live with him. Although she tried to prevent her husband from knowing that she was a ghost, it did not take long for her husband to realize the truth and leave her to stay with others instead. This condition made Nang Nak become more furious so that she went on an extreme rampage. However, Nang Nak the ghost was eventually captured and suppressed. After Nang Nak was defeated, Phra Khanong remained peaceful. The existence of Nang Nak’s ghost cannot be proved by anyone in the present. But the name of Nang Nak Phra Khanong, which was called by people in those bygone days, has been mentioned up to these days.

The story of Mae Nak is the story that has lingered on the author’s mind for a long time. More importantly, Nang Nak is an immortal ghost whom none of the ghosts can be equivalent to her. The book explores the curiosities about Mae Nak, which are likely to be the ones that linger in people’s minds throughout the time.
