—Explores the interconnected lives of these diverse characters within the challenging historical backdrop.

In 1909, bamboo harvester Lâu Sù, residing near Taiwan’s Tshing-tsuí Creek, is visited by his friend Lâu Khiân, who seeks refuge from pursuing Kiunn-á-liâu police. Amidst Japanese colonial control, the government designates the bamboo-rich land as a “model bamboo forest,” managed by Mitsubishi Paper Company. This disrupts the lives of local bamboo farmers and papermakers. The narrative weaves together characters like a Kuanyin Bodhisattva believer widow, a struggling bamboo farmer, a papermaking enthusiast, and others, including Japanese policemen. Tensions escalate, leading to a rebellion with repercussions. Despite charges for most plaintiffs, one individual is released. The bamboo forest issues persist, later fueling the 1925 Taiwanese farmers’ movements. The story intricately explores the interconnected lives of these diverse characters within the challenging historical backdrop.
