This idea comes from the thread binding techniques of ancient books. From graphic design to binding, the book cover successfully delivers the delicacy and beauty of traditional crafts.<\/p>

For the inside pages, the designer takes the unique blue glazing color of the Ming dynasty\u2019s Ruoshen tea cups and blend it on the blank spaces between photos and texts, making the layout full of tender rhythms. Art paper of different textures used for the appendix and title page creates a diverse tactile experience.<\/p>

The materials match well with the tone of visual design, nicely presenting the essence and feature of this book and successfully capture the exquisite craftsmanship of the Ming dynasty. Designed in large size, the book has a cover made of white simili paper, a yellow belly band, and a gray cardstock spine, bound with screw posts. The sharp contrast of colors precisely forms the social imagery of Hong Kong in recent years: the social movements motivated by the pursuit of a liberal constitutional system.<\/p>

Under the symbolic yellow belly band shows a slight gradient of red shades, implying the blood covered by cloth banners in the social movements. As the banner is unveiled, we see people covered in blood with missing faces. The design is a straightforward salute to those nameless heroes who died of political persecution, as well as a reflection of the core of the book.<\/p>

The red belly band on the back cover is printed with \u201cfreedom\u201d in bold characters, covering an illustration of a pile of dead bodies. Under the belly band writes \u201cHong Kong (the city)\u201d in dotted lines, insinuating a sense of disappearing. The whole design concept is full of irony, expressed through simple, violent, yet significant illustrations. This book set is about collecting sunlight from three different places in three years; they are the sunlight from an Arctic Ocean adventure, the sunset when leaving Taiwan, and the midnight sunlight of Iceland. The journeys have been transformed as consecutive stories in the form of books. The light to dark shades of the inside pages represent the different lengths of the three nights. On the sides of the books print the hours of daylight. The landscape orientation resembles an unrolled film strip. In general, the designer has a profound interpretation of how to feel lights in a picture through reading, and is able to depict lights precisely by using the language of form and material. The designer successfully utilized his\/her own design language to distinguish the book as an independent art piece from the photography works it showcases, while still keeping the original creative concept of the photographer. A belly band is used to create this two-layered book cover. The choice of different paper textures and sizes, along with the unique binding technique, produce a rather three-dimensional effect for a two-dimensional cover. The larger cover is made of paper with a concrete texture. Through the printing effect of white ink, part of the book title is cleverly covered to reflect the gist of the book\u2014as people grow up, part of their thoughts and opinions are often trapped by invisible walls but they don\u2019t know it.<\/p>

The smaller cover is made of brightly colored paper, attached to a three-dimensional structure of gradient circles of silver glitter cardstock. Being shown just a little bit, the glitter circles are like random lights shining through a door crack; but as the small cover is opened, they pop up like magic and create a playful visual effect. The concept echoes with the subheading written on the colored paper\u2014The World Beyond Adults’ Imagination. The silver bookmark hidden in the inside pages is also a smart touch.<\/p>

In general, the cover design reflects the strong contrast between the cold reality of adulthood and the splendor of youth. The special structure and creative layout successfully present the core of the book.
